SKL Voter Registration

Your Voice Matters
Bro. Michael Pechac approached the chapter with an opportunity to work with IU Athletics to achieve one of our National Programs, A Voteless People is A Hopeless People. On September 8th and September 15th of 2020 Bro. President Sam Young, Bro. Kwan Wallace, and Bro. Historian/Webmaster Dedric Dennist Jr met with Bro. Pechac (Director of Player Development/NFL Liaison), Lisa Winters (Director of Leadership & Life Skills), Amari Hartsfield (Sr. Staff Assistant/Asst. Dir FB Ops.) and Maddie White to discuss the Educational portion and the Registration portion of the event.

On Sunday, September 20th of 2020, Bro. Kwan Wallace lead a Virtual Voter Education Presentation via Zoom explaining the process of voting in Indiana, the rights students have as a voter and different issues on the ballot. Bro. Wallace mentioned the goal for the presentation was to “help students understand their rights when it comes to voting and help them understand the options they have to cast their vote. When we were asked by athletics to do this presentation, we saw it as an opportunity to reach a group of students we do not generally get to service with our programming. It is important for all people that can legally do so to vote, understand their rights, and their options if they are denied their franchise.”

On Tuesday, September 22 Sigma Kappa Lambda Brothers Sam Young, Dedric Dennist Jr, Carrington Smith, Ramir Williams, and Gamma Eta Brothers Morifing Kone and Joshua Pack assisted with getting the Student Athletics registered to vote. By partnering with IU Athletics Department, Sigma Kappa Lambda and Gamma Eta were able to assist with getting 118 students registered to vote, to allow their voice to be heard.
