The brothers of Sigma Kappa Lambda in partnership with the Gamma Eta, Zeta Rho, Theta Xi, and Sigma Phi Chapters hosted a Founders’ Day celebration and service project. The Founders’ Day program was held on Saturday, December 4th, 2021 in honor of the Jewels and the founding history of the Fraternity. Members of Sigma Kappa Lambda and Gamma Eta shared sentiments and reflections as brothers gathered with some members of the community. The ceremony consisted of readings highlighting the life of the Founders and a candlelight vigil. There were also powerful reflections about the Alpha experience from Brother James Sanders, Sam Young, Jordan Loyd, Joshua Pack, Michael Whiteside, and President Michael Johnson. The program concluded with the singing of the hymn and prayer led by Brother Alonza Lawrence.
Despite COVID-19, brothers found a way to not only recognize the founding history but to also serve the community. In partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Southern Indiana, the brothers of the aforementioned chapters raised over $600 in donations to support Toys for Tots. Toys for Tots was an opportunity to help families of Littles during the holidays who may have been economically impacted by COVID-19. Brothers purchased toys and donated them for distribution at the BBBS headquarters in Bloomington, IN. The toys were well received and BBBS applauded the efforts of the men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is serving a real need in the Bloomington community. Similarly, several of the college chapters mentored by Sigma Kappa Lambda also hosted their own charitable efforts including a caroling event hosted by the Theta Xi chapter. Despite the challenges of COVID-19, the brothers were able to spread holiday cheer during a very challenging year for many.
